"Sip the Juice..."

When people ask when I first started DJ'ing there usually a few different answers that come to mind. The first time I was really inspired though was after my friends and I had watched the movie Juice.
Influenced by watching the character Q (who was a DJ in the movie) my friend and I went out and bought a used turntable from the neighborhood flea market for a total of $6 (we paid $3 each) along with some records from the dollar bin.
Not only was the movie influential but the soundtrack was too. Eric B & Rakim, Naughty by Nature and Too $hort all had songs on the soundtrack that were a high water mark in both rap lyricism and production.
This year the movie and soundtrack Juice turns 30 years old. It’s really hard to believe that I was only 8 years old and probably still sip’n juice when this VHS and cassette would come into my life and create such an impact on me. Looking back 30 years later I am very grateful for all of the inspiration that Juice provided.
